The HUB on Smith is inviting Sheridan County seniors to take part in a free fitness assessment Sept. 23.

The HUB on Smith Fun and Wellness Department Coordinator Lisa Wells and her team are preparing six separate exercise stations that will evaluate mobility, strength, aerobic endurance, flexibility, stepping and stretching.

The conclusion of the evaluations will give seniors a baseline of their personal fitness level. According to Wells, seniors can then compare that to a national average and determine what activities the individual can work to improve.

If a senior requires a cane, walker or chair to remain mobile, Wells recommends bringing the aid along, as well as bringing the aid to any other exercise activity the senior wishes to attend; improving their use and mobility of the aid.

The Free Fitness Assessment being offered by the Hub on Smith correlates with a series of free online presentations in September created to help Wyoming’s seniors avoid falls in and outside of their home.

According to AARP, the series is called “Falls Prevention Fridays,” and is a collaboration of the Wyoming Department of Health Injury and Violence Prevention Program, Wyoming Department of Health Aging Division,  AARP Wyoming, Mountain-Pacific Quality Health, and Wyoming Center on Aging.

During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Wells explained the severity of falls among Wyoming’s senior population.
