On Tuesday, April 22, SCSD#3 held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Arvada-Clearmont School greenhouse. A good crowd of community members came to tour the greenhouse, see the vegetables and flowers that the students planted, and enjoy the refreshments provided by Aubrey Holland, school chef.

Abigail Mueller, SCSD#3 7-12 Vocational Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor, welcomed the crowd.

Clear Creek FFA members, Dellana Michelena, Chloe Mauck and Ian Andreen, cut the ribbon to celebrate the opening of the new greenhouse.

FFA President. Dellana Michelena talked about the greenhouse.

She added that the Clear Creek FFA has been doing well, they took four teams to the state FFA, saying that the teams competed well, and tried a new contest they had never done before. The chapter had four seniors who received their state FFA degrees as well.

FFA member Chole Mauck added

FFA Member Ian Andreen, who is a senior this year, felt the greenhouse would continue to be beneficial for the school and the younger students.

Chef Holland also had an electric composter on display, and talked about how the composter turns kitchen scraps “greens,” mixed with carbon-rich ‘browns,’ such as dead leaves, to make a nutrient rich feed for plants.

The students planted flowers and vegetables on April 3, and the plants were growing well in the greenhouse environment. Some will be sold, and most will be planted outside when the weather is favorable, and the danger of frost has passed. The produce will be harvested and used in the school lunch program in the fall.
