Those who are entering adulthood, but may not have had a good upbringing or were homeless when they were younger, will soon have a short term way to have a roof over their head and learn skills to become independent.

The Volunteers of America Northern Rockies has announced its new Evans Independent Living Center is about ready to accept its first residents.

The new building located on Strahan Parkway has eight furnished 2-bedroom single bed apartments, as well as an office space area and pantry.

Jon Tengesdal is the Vice-President of Housing and Outreach.

He says the VOA Northern Rockies has had 2 other apartments and has had an independent living program for awhile.

He adds the new living area is designed for those 18-21 years old, who still need help after they’ve aged out of other programs.

“We’ve just seen an increase need of kids who have been working with the Department of Family Services and then it’s kind of that looking to the future for these kids, because once they turn 18, the Department of Family Services is done, usually with their services with them, so then these kids need some help moving forward and that’s where we’re stepping in to try to help those kids become adults, young adults and productive in the community.”

Tengesdal says the apartments should have their first tenants moved in by the end of this month.
