WY Property Tax Reduction Bill Could Mean Revenue Loss For Community Colleges

While many residential property owners are keeping an eye on the Legislature to see if their property taxes will go down, Wyoming’s Community Colleges are bracing to see what impact it would have on revenue.
Property tax revenue is one of 3 revenue sources for community colleges in Wyoming.
Senate File 69 would cut property taxes by 50% on a single family residential structure and the associated improved land, for the first $1-million of the fair market value.
Sheridan College President Dr. Walter Tribley explains how the bill would impact the college, although right now it’s hard to tell exactly dollar-wise how much of an impact it would have.
“When you look at each of the 23 counties in Wyoming and you ask the question, what percent of the property tax revenue comes from industry and what percent comes from residential properties, well we are almost 76% residential properties, so it really does impact us quite a bit and it impacts other districts as well.”
Senate File 69 is scheduled to undergo its 3rd and final reading in the House on Wednesday morning (February 19th).
It passed the Senate by a vote of 23-8, and if it passes the House, the bill would then head to Governor Mark Gordon to await his signature.

Education is a valuable commodity. It should not be dependent on funding from property taxes. Funding should come from the people using and benefiting from education.
It’s called tuition. Students pay the fee, and get the degree.
Homeowners with no kids in college shouldn’t be charged at all. It’s called the American way. If you need an education, then go pay for it and don’t disperse the costs to those NOT using the service.
Let’s eliminate all property tax funding of education. That way no college admin-types can complain when we finally get some real property tax relief….because they will no longer be feeding at the property tax trough.

For Tax-Payers, any and all tax cuts are Always a “net positive.”
Only the tax-eaters see tax cuts as a “loss of revenue.” They have it exactly backwards.
Let’s reduce the tax burden on everyone and let the free-market work!
