Knowing the weather conditions when traveling is a crucial component to ensuring a safe journey. According to the Department of Transportation, each year 24% of weather-related vehicle crashes occur on snowy, slushy, or icy pavement and 15% happen during snowfall or sleet. Over 1,300 people are killed and more than 116,800 people are injured in vehicle crashes on snowy, slushy, or icy pavement annually.
Wyoming Highway Patrol Lieutenant Erik Jorgensen made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse saying a safe journey starts long before the car leaves the driveway.

The Lieutenant said even with inclement weather conditions the number one citation issued by the WHP in District 4 is for speeding violations. Jorgensen said drivers should also ensure they are looking at each speed limit postings along the Interstate and highways as they can change depending on weather conditions. The posted speed limit is the legal limit for that section of roadway at that time. If conditions are too severe for a driving ability, waiting out the storm may be the safest tactic.
