On December 15, at 2 p.m., the Big Horn City Historical Society will present a talk, Cabin in the Sky By Matt Westkott. The talk will focus on Westkott’s discovering and rebuilding the historic Larsen cabin in the Big Horn Mountains, and will be held in the Big Horn Women’s Club building.

In the 1930’s Louis Larsen, a local outdoorsman from Sheridan, WY, embarked on an adventure to build a cabin in the Bighorn Mountains. His endeavor led him to the edge of a mountaintop near Little Goose Peak along the Little Goose Canyon cliffs. After completing the cabin, he permitted the land and received a deed in 1937.

In 1942 he passed away and many of the adventures seemed to drift away. Louis had 2 children: a son named Boyd, and a daughter named Geneva, after his favorite lake in the Bighorn Mountains.

They each had 3 children but only a few of the grandkids traveled the rugged trails and cliffs to enjoy the family cabin. Since the mid 1970’s, none of the 6 grandkids have returned and after the 1990’s Stockwell fire no one had verified the condition of the cabin.

In the spring of 2022 Matt Westkott, an experienced backpacker & local realtor, received a call from Louis Larsen’s granddaughter, Leslie Nelson, regarding the property and the adventure began again. After nearly a month of trying to find its location, the cabin site was found but the structure had perished.

The property was purchased by the Westkott family with a promise to rebuild the cabin and continue Louis Larsen’s legacy. Listen to Matt Westkott explain how he found the cabin site, researched the history of Louis Larsen, discovered the trails near the property, and learned specific construction details to help rebuild the isolated cabin perched on the mountains edge.

The Big Horn City Historical Society usually meets on the 4th Sunday of Every Month, but this month the meeting will be held on Dec 15. There will be a carry-in potluck lunch starting at 1:00 with the Program to follow at 2:00 attendees are asked to bring a salad or dessert or main dish or rolls for the meal. We appreciate everyone’s help in setting up and closing down.
