A new public charity organization in Sheridan County has awarded its first grants to various nonprofits.
The Sheridan Community Foundation earned its IRS designation as a public charity last year, and has since been working to build partnerships and its community fund to support worthy, unmet needs in Sheridan County.
Recently the Foundation awarded $500 grants to 18 nonprofits in the county.
Foundation President Mark Kinner says the Foundation was formed to support and strengthen the Sheridan community through charitable giving and philanthropic education.
“This is a community effort to be a resource for people who want to leave a legacy, who want to leave a contribution that might help make a difference down the road and so that was the sort of the impetus. We received a lot of feedback from people that had felt like we’ve needed this for a long time and so this is an effort.”
The nonfits that received the $500 grants are:
Clearmont Historical Group
Marion Daycare and Learning Center
Sheridan Foster Parent Exchange
Compass Center for Families
Green House Living for Sheridan
Uprising
Story Public Library
Rooted in Wyoming
Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Bighorns
Tongue River Child’s Place

Kudos to the foundation for raising money the “old fashioned way” by just asking for voluntary donations, instead of using forced-taxation.
We need more voluntary giving and less forced-taxation in Sheridan County.
“Lower Taxes are better”, will do that by having less of our money stuffed into gov’t coffers and more in our own pockets that we can then use for voluntary giving.
