SCSD#2 School Board Met on Monday

The SCSD#2 Board held its monthly meeting on Monday, September 9th. In the absence of Chairman Shane Rader, Vice-chair Arin Waddell chaired the meeting.

Superintendent Scott Stults said the first weeks at SCSD#2 went very well. He reported that the policy for students to leave their cell phones in their backpacks during classes is working well. According to Stults, students are

“I applaud the high school for that,” Stults said. He added that kids are social creatures, and without the cell phones they engage with each other more. “I think we’ll see a trend,” he added.

He talked about Student Council planning for Homecoming on Oct. 18, “We are off to a great start,” he said.

Troy Decker, Facilities Manager, gave an update on the renovations at the schools, and an update on the 5th Street Green house. Trustee Michael Lansing added he had heard some comments from the public about the greenhouse, and felt there was misinformation about what it is used for. He said he heard a comment that,

The board also heard from business manager Brandon Finney about the recent audit, which was done by the firm of Carver Florek & James, CPAs. The board voted to approve the audit report.

Stults shared with the board the PLC (Professional Learning Community) Question #4, which was “What do we do when kids already have it?” He said they provide an extension of learning, more depth of knowledge questions, and we ask them to gain more knowledge. He added they want to challenge the students. All about deeper thinking, more critical problem solving, and students are extending and expanding on the learning.

In new business the board approved a bid for snow removal for the winter, and a summer school update.

The floor was then opened to audience comments and Melinda Abbott had a comment about the seclusion and restraint policy.

The board opened up the public meeting and in-person interview with Carol Kane about the application for the proposed Cloud Peak Academy Charter School. Action on the charter school will be taken in the October board meeting. This will be addressed in an upcoming story.
