A Resolution that will allow Buffalo city residents to opt out of receiving new water meters and pay an additional fee has been approved by the city council on a split vote.

At the council meeting Tuesday evening, Mayor Shane Schrader read the Resolution explaining what it does.

The Resolution was in response to some city residents that were concerned over the new-style “smart” water meters and the possible health risks involved with the transmission of information in a computerized collection process that is then used to determine usage for billing, instead of having to manually read a water meter, as has been traditionally done.

According to City Clerk/Treasurer Julie Silbernagel, residents can opt out but will pay an additional $15 fee for doing so, to cover the city’s cost of manually reading their meter and processing their bill monthly.

The council voted to approve Resolution No. 1482, with Councilman Mike Madden voting against.

Concerned about the health risks? Good grief.. Do they own cell phones? What about their neighbors water meter? Even if they do not have cell phones they are surrounded by “radio” waves. If someone is actually concerned about this they should not be living in an incorporated city where they are surrounded by communications equipment. For the health of these poor people, install the new meters and drive them into an isolated cabin where they belong.
