In early 2022, a Housing Land Trust Committee was formed to evaluate the feasibility of using a housing land trust to address attainable housing in Sheridan County. The committee recommended that Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Bighorns manage the trust with a seven member board to be known as the Sheridan County Attainable Housing Council. The Sheridan County Housing Land Trust through Habitat is a separate operation from Habitat’s other housing projects.
Sheridan County Housing Land Trust Administrator Jamie Rivera and Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Bighorns Executive Director Christine Dieterich made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss the first major project developed by the Housing Land Trust to address the affordable housing crisis in Sheridan County.
Rivera explained how the land trust will maintain the affordability of the homes while also supporting the homeowners.

The first three single-family homes to be built in Weston Village were included within a request for proposals for contractors looking to construct the infrastructure of the development.
In the future, the Housing Land Trust will work with developers to construct a further 27 homes as well as explore and utilize various funding opportunities to continue the project.

The Sheridan County Housing Land Trust will also actively seek out other housing opportunities, according to Dietrich. The Weston Village development is only the first major step to curbing the affordable housing problem facing the Sheridan Region.
