WYDOT Senior Public Relations Specialist Laura Dalles and WYDOT District Traffic Engineer for NE Wyoming District 4 Michelle Edwards made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse inviting the public to voice their opinions, concerns and insights on what should be done with the Bighorn Y intersection.

The intersection of US 87, WY 332, and WY 335, known as the Bighorn Y intersection, is currently being studied through a contractor paid for by WYDOT. The intention of this study is to determine if the department should change the intersection to allow for safer and more efficient traffic flow.

According to Edwards, nothing has been decided and WYDOT would like to gather as much information about the intersection and its history as possible before investing time and money into its reconstruction.

The intersection has accumulated many reported near-miss accidents and WYDOT receives concerning reports about merging and speeds in the area, mostly in the form of phone calls.

The engineers are analyzing existing traffic operations and future conditions, traffic volume, turning movement count, five-year crash data and overall function of the intersection.

Although funds and materials are always a factor, WYDOT is willing to explore many possibilities to make this intersection safer for commuters, including emplacement of a roundabout or traffic light.

Throughout the next year, the study team will be conducting data collection and analysis. Once a draft report is ready, the study team will host a second online, self-guided meeting and an in-person public meeting.
