cvannoyAt the SCSD#1 Jan 16 board meeting held in Big Horn, Big Horn Principal Al Sparkman presented the Big Horn High School State Champion Drama Club, and he recognized the drama coaches, Dustin Olsen and volunteer coach Jay Arcarese.
Sparkman noted that students in drama, speech and debate participate in venues different from sports, and it is not a ‘fan friendly venue,’ he added that he wanted to make sure they got their recognition.
He talked about how the WHAA awards points for the championship, as a way to protect the smaller schools, however
He also introduced some individual winners on the team, including Ian Garrison, who earned an audition at the Juilliard School, a world leader in performing arts education. His story will be on Sheridan Media later.
The school board also heard a presentation from Stephanie Aitchison, SCSD#1 career coach at on the mock job interview day.
In preparation for the day, students learned how to craft resumes, write cover letters, and even how to tie a tie, among other skills needed for the workplace.
She said that the students filled out a survey and they expressed a desire to know about entrepreneurship, retirement, mitigating debt, financing a car and how to increase volunteer hours for scholarship opportunities.
Two community members Jan Prouty and Morgan Stalick spoke to the board in appreciation for what they do.
Trustee Eric Lofgren read several thank you cards as well.
In other business the school board approved the school calendar, approved the contract for superintendent Dr. Jeff Jones, and reported on the applicants to fill the trustee position left open by Trustee Chad Baker. The board will interview the applicants and make a decision. They also voted to table the FY23 audit as the presenter did not make the board meeting to the weather.
