Cleanup at the Old Acme Power Plant site could start early next year, but work has to start outside of the Power Plant building first.

Volunteer clean-up efforts can not be used, because the soil around the power plant building is contaminated with asbestos from within the building.

Sheridan County Conservation District Manager Carrie Rogaczewski says while the building is one the most important parts of the clean-up, crews need to be able to get into it first.

She adds the District has about 90% of the money already needed for this phase of the project.

“The first piece that we’re going to do is we do have through these grants, funds, can be used for debris removal, salvage, so that those activities will facilitate efforts to do the actual asbestos cleanup and the soils cleanup.”

The cost for debris cleanup is estimated at $1.2 million, but $117,000 of that must come through matching funds.

Rogaczewski says the District already has about $65,000 of that.

The District is soliciting bids for debris removal and may award a contract next month.

Within the junk blocking the way to the building is around 900 tires, 55 cubic yards of wood debris and about 38,700 pounds of scrap metal.
