On June 9, the public is invited to an educational lecture on George Bird Grinnell (1849-1938), at the Brinton Museum. There will be a reception beginning at 6 p.m. followed by the lecture at 7.

The lecture will be presented by nationally known journalist John Taliaferro. Taliaferro is the author of the highly regarded publication, “Grinnell, America’s Environmental Pioneer and His Restless Drive to Save the West”.

Grinnell had a deep connection to the West, and along with his relationship to the Northern Cheyenne People, helped to preserve much of what are now public western lands.

Grinnell wrote several books about the northern American plains and the Plains Indian tribes. His two best-known works about the Cheyenne are The Fighting Cheyennes (1915), and a two-volume work, The Cheyenne Indians: Their History and Lifeways (1923)

Along with William T. Hornaday, Grinnell studied the buffalo and their relationship to Plains tribal culture. He also helped to influence public opinion and his work on legislation to help save the bison from extinction.

No reservations needed for the reception or the lecture, and there is no charge.

The Brinton Museum connects people to the past, present and future of the American West through its historic Quarter Circle Ă Ranch, Fine Art, and American Indian Art Collections. There are many things to do at the Brinton, see their website for upcoming summer events at thebrintonmuseum.org

The John Taliaferro lecture program is made possible by the generous support of Carol and Sam Mavrakis, The Seidler Foundation; Kay Wallick and D J Purcell; and Fort Phil Kearny/Bozeman Trail Association.
