Jury Duty Scam Making Its Way Through Wyoming Again

There’s no jury deliberating on if you missed a court case.

The Sheridan and Johnson County Sheriff Offices say they have received reports of scammers pretending to be local or regional law enforcement professionals, calling residents to advise them they missed jury duty.

The scammer(s) have changed their approach to sound more legitimate, by making sure they don’t have a noticeable accent, and play a background recording of a scanner or police radios.

They also use legitimate sounding police lingo and advise the potential victim that a gag order issued by a judge, prohibits speaking with anyone about the fees owed.

The caller then asks the victim to drive to a box store and purchase prepaid credit cards.

The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind citizens that law enforcement will never demand payment over the phone.

If you suspect something, terminate the phone call, then call your local law enforcement’s non-emergency number.

If your caller ID shows a legitimate local phone number, it can be spoofed to further authenticate the attempted scam.
