Governor Gordon, U.S. Forest Service Sign Updated Stewardship Agreement https://sheridanmedia.com/news/217900/governor-gordon-u-s-forest-service-sign-updated-stewardship-agreement/ https://sheridanmedia.com/news/217900/governor-gordon-u-s-forest-service-sign-updated-stewardship-agreement/#respond Fri, 23 Jan 2026 00:29:59 +0000 https://sheridanmedia.com/?p=217900 Governor Gordon (R-WY) and U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz have signed an updated Shared Stewardship Agreement, reaffirming and strengthening the long-standing partnership between the State of Wyoming and the USDA Forest Service (USDA-FS). “Wyoming values the relationship between the U.S. Forest Service and the State of Wyoming,” Governor Gordon…]]> Governor Gordon (R-WY) and U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz have signed an updated Shared Stewardship Agreement, reaffirming and strengthening the long-standing partnership between the State of Wyoming and the USDA Forest Service (USDA-FS).

“Wyoming values the relationship between the U.S. Forest Service and the State of Wyoming,” Governor Gordon said.  “This is about more than trees. It’s about managing entire landscapes, across boundaries and jurisdictions, to ensure healthier forests, safer communities, and more resources for future generations.”

Wyoming and the USDA-FS have operated under a Shared Stewardship Agreement since 2020. Rather than replacing the current framework, the updated agreement formally recognizes the substantial progress already achieved and sets a clear path for future collaborative planning and implementation.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the Forest Service has made unprecedented investments in forest health, reducing wildfire risk, expanding active management, and maintaining access to national forests and grasslands — and shared stewardship is a cornerstone of that policy,” Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz said . “These challenges are too big for any one organization. That’s why, under this Administration, we’ve committed to working more closely with our state partners to share resources and make better decisions that benefit the people and communities we serve in Wyoming and across the nation.”

Currently, three state agencies operate under master agreements through the Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) to implement projects on USDA-FS administered lands.

The revised agreement also expands opportunities for participation by additional federal, state, and local partners in the co-development and execution of projects. This multi-agency, cross-boundary collaboration reflects Wyoming’s resource management approach and strengthens coordination across jurisdictional lines.

“Renewing this partnership reaffirms our shared commitment to stewarding Wyoming’s forests and rangelands together. The long-standing collaboration between the Forest Service and the State of Wyoming continues to strengthen our ability to address wildfire risk, support local communities, and sustain the health of these landscapes for generations to come,”  Troy Heithecker said, Regional Forester for Rocky Mountain and Northern Regions, U.S. Forest Service.

Wyoming’s Shared Stewardship Agreement is a distinctive and unique commitment between Wyoming and the USDA-FS in the joint management of resources beyond timber, encompassing energy, wildlife and habitat, recreation, and livestock grazing.

The…]]> Competition for the Sheridan Hawks Amateur Boys Hockey Team is going to step up 1 level, and it’s possible the team may do so next season.

The team is currently 11-0-1 on the season and plays in the State B League, which to some is considered the JV level.

The Hawks traveled to Casper back in November to play the ‘B’ team, but are returning to Casper this weekend, to take on the ‘A’ team.

Sheridan Head Coach Ryan Johnson says there is a lot of difference between the 2 levels in terms of style of play and the plan for the Hawks is to get back into the ‘A’ level.

“The biggest difference between JV and varsity, honestly, the speed of the game, but it’s the flow, so the flow of the game is just better, a little bit more crisp. The passes, the shooting. At that level, it can be kind of a game of mistakes and a lot of time, the team that makes the fewest mistakes, winds up winning the game. It’s very nitpicky. You make one tiny mistake, it can cost you the game, whereas at JV sometimes you can make mistakes and still recover. We debated a lot this last off-season on whether to go varsity this year or not and then we ultimately decided since our team is young, to stay JV one more year, but the goal is to go varsity and this is going to be a huge gauge to see where we stand.”

The Hawks are hosting this year’s State ‘B’ Tournament, which is scheduled for February 27th through March 1st.

The Sheridan Lady Hawks will have a busy weekend of games both on the road and at home.

The team will play at Miles City, Montana tomorrow evening and Saturday morning, then return home to play Gillette both Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

The Lady Hawks are the 2-time defending state champs and are currently 4th in the girls standings this season, while Miles City is 2nd.

Sheridan Head Coach Jay Charlebois says after a rough start to the season in November, the girls have responded well when it comes to getting their opponents’ best shot.

“They defiantly have been giving it to us. This is the first year that we’ve really had to face a lot of adversity as far as that goes. We’ve always still been at the top and I feel like we’re still in that position, but almost seems like some teams just want it a little bit more, but I think we’re at the point where we’re kind of overcoming that as a team and keep pushing forward.”

The trip to Miles City is the final road trip of the regular season, ahead of the state tournament.

After that, the Lady Hawks will play their last 8 regular season games at home.

According to UW, this catalog was created to provide more resources to social studies and English language arts teachers who want to build local historical and cultural content and resources into their classes. In this new project – the Wyoming Museums Project – the Wallop team created modules in WyoLearn that highlight the mission, goals and resources available at Wyoming’s museums and cultural resources. The catalog is free to all teachers and the public in UW’s WyoLearn catalog at https://civic.catalog.instructure.com/

The Wyoming Museums Project catalog hosts resources for educators to easily access basic information about their local museums, including hours of operation, location, website and educational resources offered. The catalog’s 50-plus museums are organized by county to allow teachers, parents and students to easily find museums near them.

“As we mark America’s 250 Celebration in 2026, we want to help connect teachers, parents and students to the many terrific resources available here in our own backyard. From UW’s American Heritage Center and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, to smaller county museums that provide important historical and cultural resources specific to their region or a particular topic, there’s a lot to offer,” Wallop Civic Engagement Program Director and Clyde E. and Jerrine N. Stewart Family Professor in Public Service Jean Garrison said. “I’d like to thank the many donors who support the Wallop Program and the UW students who did the hard work to make this new catalog resource available in 2026.”

The Wallop Wyoming Museums Project is an ongoing project that can continue to grow and add resources.

UW urges the public to email the Wallop Program at wallop@uwyo.edu, if there are additional museums or resources that they feel should be included in the catalog.
