Miss Indian America Artwork at SAGE

On Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at SAGE Community Arts at 21 West Brundage Street, there will be an Artisan Street Market with homemade Native American Art, Food vendors and more by the friends and families of Miss Indian Americas.

Rachel Mathews-Landis, of SAGE Gallery, talked about the upcoming street fair.

Also, currently on display between June 4 and July 13 there is a collective art exhibit, History and Hope, honoring the Miss Indian Americas.

Mathews-Landis talked about the exhibit.

One of the exhibitors is Annita Little Coyote Wolf Black, of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, who brought in some fabric art made by her mother.

Lucy Yellowmule – her granddaughter’s bead work will be on display

MIA I – Arlene Wesley’s family (Arlene was the first Miss Indian America in 1953. She passed in 2018 – her bead work will be on display)

MIA II – Mary Louise Defender (She is 92. She was selected in 1954. She has poetry cds.)

MIA IV – Sandra Gover  (Sara Robinson will share bead work by and for Sandra – Sandra has passed)

MIA VIII – Brenda Bearchum’s daughter Annita Wolf Black will share fabric art by Brenda. (Brenda has passed. Her granddaughter, Stacie Wolf Black, will have paintings in the show.)

MIA X – Willie Youpee – (Widower Larry Bussard has approved Sharron Ahtone’s granddaughter to represent Willie; Georgeanne Growingthunder.)

MIA X – Michele Portwood (She will be represented by her cousin Jacki Sevier. Jacki will have 3 pieces of artwork in the show.)

MIA XII – Sharron Ahtone (Her daughter Tahnee Ahtone & granddaughter will also be in the show.)

MIA XVII – Virginia Stroud (Several items will be on display – some for sale.)

MIA XXI – Claire Manning (Claire’s niece, Shiara Holmes, will represent Claire.)

MIA XXII – deana harragarra waters (Her daughter, Regina, will also be in the show along with her friend Birdie Real Bird. Birdie’s family were instrumental in All American Indian Days 1953-1984.)

MIA XXV – Susan Arkeketa (She will be represented by her 2 daughters, Jessica and Cody.)
