The high school wrestling season is not necessarily over after the state meet.
Thirteen Sheridan wrestlers competed at the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) folk style wrestling national championship tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
For the boys, wrestlers compete against other wrestlers within their grade level (freshmen vs. freshmen, sophomores vs. sophomores, etc…), in an effort to place in the top 8, which wins them All-American status.
Since there are not as many girl competitors, grade level doesn’t matter.
For the 2nd year in a row, Dane Steel of Sheridan has won All-American status.
The junior won his first 4 matches to advance to the quarter-finals.
He dropped the next match to the eventual national champ, but won the next 2 matches in the consolation round to qualify for the 3rd place match, where he dropped a 3-2 decision and finished 4th.
Steel was 5th in the sophomore 145 pound weight class last year.
In Wyoming, he is a 2-time state champ at 152 pounds.
